Winter is known for its festive holidays, sometimes frigid weather and, yes, all the opportunities we have to indulge in a variety of sweet treats. Although it can be easy to let your exercise routine slide, it’s absolutely possible to get in shape and maintain your fitness during these cold months by following some of these tips.

Fire It Up: HIIT

You can get your fitness levels up by boosting your workout routine. Doing HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) can have a significant impact  in terms of losing weight and toning up. No one has to exhaust themselves by spending extra hours working out to burn off the calories they eat during the holiday season. By exercising smart, anyone can maintain or even increase their fitness levels. A HIIT treadmill workout is as follows and should be repeated for the full duration of 15-30 minutes:

        • 1 min. warm-up walk
        • Sprint for 30 sec.
        • Walk for 15 sec.
        • Sprint for 30 sec.
        • Walk for 15 sec.

Embrace the Cold

Cold weather doesn’t mean we can’t go outside and exercise. I actually think we should challenge ourselves to embrace the cold by incorporating fun winter sports into our workout routine. Winter sports include skiing, ice boating, and “fat biking.”

Indoor Exercise Routine

Waking up early and going to the local gym in blustery cold weather is not the only option. There are millions of easily accessible fitness videos online. These videos can be used to create a personalized exercise playlist. As a resident of Boston, I can personally attest to the benefits of staying indoors to exercise!

Layers on top of Layers

Hibernating until winter is over is not a feasible option for most of us. Given that fact, people should layer up their clothes and continue their routines as they normally would. Cold weather doesn’t have to serve as an excuse for forgetting about fitness.
